HardWhich Video Game Had The Highest Per-Copy Cost?
Answer: Too Human
Over the years there have been quite a few video games with big budgets and quite a few video games with lack luster sales. Never have the two spheres–great expense and mediocre sales–combined with as much profit loss as with the release of the Xbox 360 game Too Human.
Too Human, an Action-RPG developed by Silicon Knights, spent over a decade bouncing from one console maker’s stable to another. Originally planned as a massive multi-disc release for the Sony Playstation in 1999, it ended up idling at Nintendo with partial development as a GameCube game, and was eventually sold to Microsoft in 2005.
The game stalled and started its way through development for the next three years before a poorly received release in 2008. The total development costs had crept to over 60 million dollars while the game ultimately sold a little under 700,000 copies. As a result, the cost per copy of the game sold hovered around $90, a full $30 over the MSRP of $59.95, giving Too Human the highest per-copy development cost of any video game.
