Which Video Game Console Was The Last To Use Cartridges?

Dreamcast
GameCube
PlayStation 2
N64

Answer: N64

Game cartridges were an integral part of the video game experience throughout the 1980s and 1990s. From the Atari to the Sega Genesis to the Super Nintendo, video games came in large plastic cartridges that, like some sort of video game filled 8-track tape, would dispense video game goodness when plugged into their host system.

Cartridges gave way to optical media much in the same way that cassette tapes gave way to CDs; by the end of the 1990s, all the major players in the console video game market had shifted away from cartridges, except for Nintendo with their N64 console. With the introduction of the GameCube in 2001 (which used miniDVD media), Nintendo retired the cartridge both for their company and the entire console industry.
