HardWhich Type Of Animal Was Named After NSA Whistle Blower Edward Snowden?
Answer: Crayfish
Fame is a surefire way to have a newly discovered creature named after you. Over the years creatures big and small have been named after presidents, actors, actresses, fellow scientists of renown, and all manner of famous people.
With that in mind, it isn’t surprising that Edward Snowden, made famous the world over for his role in leaking NSA documents and exposing the extent of U.S. government surveillance, would find his name attached to a new creature.
What kind of creature? In 2015 German scientists, Christian Lukhaup and colleagues discovered that a species of crayfish common to Indonesia had been previously lumped in with another species but was, in fact, a distinct species unto itself.
When it came time to name the freshly identified crayfish species, the Germans opted to name it after Edward Snowden, announcing in their publication on the matter:
“The new species is named after the American freedom fighter Edward Joseph Snowden. He is honored due to his extraordinary achievements in defense of justice, and freedom.”
Whatever your opinion might be on the matter, clearly they thought quite highly of Snowden and the species Cherax snowden now bears his name.
