A Clockwork Orange
Escape from the Planet of the Apes
2001: A Space Odyssey
Bladerunner

Answer: A Clockwork Orange

The first Sci-Fi film to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar was A Clockwork Orange in 1971. The film was adapted by Stanley Kubrick from the 1962 Anthony Burgess novel of the same title. Kubrick’s adaptation was critically acclaimed and, in addition to being nominated for Best Picture, was also nominated for Best Director, Best Film Editing, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Although the film was critically acclaimed, the graphic violence and sexual content of the film proved highly controversial. The film was so controversial in England, the country where it was shot and edited, that it was banned from the country for 27 years.
