Answer: Earthworm Jim

If you played video games in the 1990s, there’s a good chance you remember the quirky side-scrolling platform game originally released in 1994 for the Sega Genesis, but quickly ported to other platforms like the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Game Boy, and Windows.

The colorful adventure focuses on Earthworm Jim, an earthworm who gains his super intelligence and abilities as a result of the Super Suit (short for Ultra-High-Tech-Indestructible-Super-Space-Cyber-Suit) falling on him and transforming him into the super hero seen in the video game.

The suit, invented by Professor Monkey-For-A-Head, was entrusted to the care of bounty hunter Psy-Crow for delivery, but while the suit was en route to Queen Slug-For-A-Butt, a rebel space pilot stole it. During the struggle to reclaim the suit, it fell to Earth and landed on Jim.

Now if that all sounds absurdly tongue-in-cheek, it is. The game was created as a satire of the numerous platform games on the market as well as video game tropes in general. The princess in need of rescuing doesn’t even have a proper name, but is simply “Princess-What’s-Her-Name”, a dig at the video game trend of throw-away female characters in need of constant rescue.
