The soft drink we now call Pepsi wasn’t always known as such. Invented in 1893 by Caleb Bradham, a pharmacist from North Carolina, the drink originally had a much more personal title: “Brad’s Drink”, named after its creator.
It wasn’t until bringing the soft drink to mass market in 1898 that Bradham ditched the inventor-centered name and adopted “Pepsi-Cola”, basing the new name on the digestive enzyme pepsin and kola nuts found in the drink (which Bradham marketed as a digestive aid and energy booster). The brand remained “Pepsi-Cola” until 1961 when it was simply shortened to “Pepsi” (and is currently known in North America alternatively as Pepsi-Cola as of 2014).
