HardWhich Insects Are Used In Emergency Medicine?
Answer: Driver Ants
Ants of the genus Dorylus, known colloquially as Driver Ants, are common in central and east Africa. For thousands of years, locals there have used the ants in emergencies with great success.
The Driver Ants have large and extremely powerful jaws that can be used, in a pinch, as emergency sutures by forcing the ant to bite the wound and then snapping its body off. This leaves the jaw and head to hold the wound closed, an arrangement which will hold for several days at a time. Use of the ants in this fashion by many indigenous African tribes extends back into prehistory.
