HardWhich Film Featured The World’s First Entirely Computer Generated Sequence?
Answer: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
In the second installment of Star Trek films, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, one of the most climactic moments in the movie revolves around the activation of an amazing piece of technology known as the Genesis Device–a torpedo capable of reorganizing matter such that it can either destroy a living planet or terraform a lifeless one into a lush world.
The climactic moment in the movie when Genesis Device is activated is a minute long sequence framing a lifeless planet transforming into an inhabitable world. That sequence was the first completely computer animated sequence in movie history. No physical prop, backdrop, or any analog manipulation was used to create the illusion of the changing planet–it was entirely created in the computers of Industrial Light and Magic’s designers.
