If you’ve been paying taxes for a number of years, then you know the drill. When you owe the IRS, you can transfer the money to them directly from your bank account, mail them a check, or—if you’re desperate or cleverly gaming your credit card’s reward points—you can even pay by credit card. One thing they’re pretty explicit about in most contexts is that they don’t want cold hard cash and you certainly shouldn’t mail it to them.

There is, however, one exception to the rule. In 34 states across the U.S., there are around 7,000 7-Eleven locations participating in a program run by the IRS designed to allow people to pay their taxes with cash. At these locations, you can submit up to $1,000 per day towards your tax bill with a $3.99 fee per transaction. The program launched in 2016 as a venue for tax payers who don’t have a bank account or credit card to pay their taxes with cash.

Before you stroll into a 7-Eleven with the expectation of plunking down cash to pay your taxes next year, make sure you visit the IRS website and start the process first. From there, you’ll be guided through the identity verification process, then given a unique payment code (with instructions) and the address of the nearest participating location.
