HardThe Only Country In The World With Three Capital Cities Is?
Answer: South Africa
If you live in a country where there is a single capital city where the different branches of your government are concentrated with central offices, you may find the arrangement they have going in South Africa to be more than a bit unusual.
The country has no legally defined single capital city per the constitution, but instead divides the three branches of the government among different cities. The South African Parliament resides in Cape Town (the legislative capital), the Supreme Court resides in Bloemfontein (the judicial capital), and the president lives in Pretoria (the administrative capital).
The distribution of branches across the geographic space of the country is a holdover from political struggles in the early 20th century when the predecessor to modern South Africa, the Union of South Africa, was formed. In order to put a halt to serious contention over where the capital city would be located after the various colonies and regions were combined into a larger state, it was determined that each major region would have its own capital city and that the responsibilities of the government would be split amongst them.
