HardThe Oldest Stone Tools Were Found In What Modern Day Country?
Answer: Kenya
The oldest stone tools—that is, stone implements that show evidence of shaping by humans or hominins for some purpose—are a staggering 3.3 million years old. These tools, found at an archaeological site near Lake Turkana, Kenya, offer insight into the use of tools and the cognitive abilities of early hominins.
The tools are believed to have been crafted by Australopithecus afarensis. This particular species of hominin has been made famous by Lucy—the name given to a 3.2 million year old partial skeleton of the species discovered in 1974.
Among the tools recovered from the site are stone anvils, cores (stones that remain after pieces have been chipped off), flakes indicating napping and other stone shaping work, as well as over one hundred other artifacts indicating extended and heavy use of the site.
