HardSince The Introduction Of The Game Cube, Nintendo Console CPUs Are Manufactured By?
Answer: IBM
Nintendo might design their consoles, a fair number of their hit games, and market their systems worldwide, but they most definitely outsource the design and production of their processors.
Since the Nintendo GameCube, the CPUs of Nintendo consoles have been designed by IBM and largely based on the PowerPC chip platform. The GameCube featured the “Gekko” processor which ran at 486 MHz and was a variant of the PowerPC 750CXe line. The Wii featured the “Broadway” processor which ran at 729 MHz and is based on the PowerPC 750CL chip.
Despite criticism that the Wii U didn’t include much of a hardware upgrade over the Wii, the CPU (at least) got quite a bump. The Wii U sports a 1.24 GHz tri-core processor, “Espresso”, and although it shares some technology with the Power7 line of processors, the chip appears to be more highly customized for Nintendo than previous IBM creations.
