HardIn 2007 A Radio Show Contestant Died Of Water Intoxication In A Bid To Win A?
Answer: Nintendo Wii
In what will likely (and hopefully) go down as the most tragic radio show contest outcome of all time, a contestant in a 2007 contest on KDND, a pop music radio station based out of Sacramento, CA, died in an attempt to win a Nintendo Wii game console.
The contest hinged on both the popularity of the console (which was nearly impossible to find on store shelves at the time due to soaring demand) and the name of it. The “Hold Your Wee for a Wii” contest had the contestants on the Morning Rave morning show drink eight fluid ounces of water every 15 minutes with increasing volumes of water as the contest went on. The person who could hold out the longest without using the bathroom was the winner.
Despite the fact that multiple callers rang up the station and warned the DJs running the contest that what they were doing was extremely dangerous and could prove fatal for the contestants, they continued on with the contest. The callers were proven tragically correct when one of the 17 contestants, Jennifer Strange, died later that day of water intoxication: a condition wherein excessive amounts of water consumption radically disturbs the balance of electrolytes in the body to such an extreme degree that brain function is disrupted. As you’d imagine, such cases are rare and outside of extreme exercise without electrolyte-rich water intake, feeding newborns excessive amounts of water, or, you guessed it, water drinking contests, water intoxication is very rare.
Unsurprisingly, the DJs in charge of the contest were let go and a very justifiable wrongful death lawsuit was logged against the radio station (a lawsuit that was resolved by the jury within a week in favor of the Strange family).
