HardEvery Christmas Eve Half of Sweden Sits Down To Watch What?
Answer: Donald Duck and His Friends Wish You a Merry Christmas
For Christmas of 1958, Disney aired a special on ABC called “From All of Us to All of You” in the United States. The show was hosted by Jiminy Cricket, Mickey Mouse, and Tinkerbell, and included a series of shorts starring Disney icons and clips from Disney feature films like Peter Pan and Bambi.
After appearing in the U.S., the special was broadcast in various markets around the world over the ensuing decades. Among all the foreign markets, it really took hold as a Christmas tradition in Scandinavian countries and especially in Sweden. There, where Donald Duck is radically more popular than the other traditional Disney characters, it was rebranded “Donald Duck and His Friends Wish You a Merry Christmas”, and is broadcast every Christmas Eve at 3PM on the national public television network SVT.
It’s consistently one of the most popular shows broadcast each year with anywhere from 3.2 to 4.3 million Swedes tuning in (roughly 30-50% of the entire country). In 2012, for example, 3.8 million Swedes watches the show and it was the second most popular television broadcast of the year.
