A Sports Team
Its Chemical Composition

Answer: A Sports Team

AstroTurf is a brand of artificial turf invented in the 1960s by inventors Donald L. Elbert, James M. Faria, and Robert T. Wright to serve as a cost effective and long lasting alternative to the cost of laying down and maintaining natural turf in stadiums and sports venues. Released to the public in 1965 under the name ChemGrass (a rather factual but not particularly catchy nod to its synthetic origin), it was quickly renamed in 1966 to AstroTurf.

Why AstroTurf? The first major adopter of ChemGrass was the Houston Astrodome, original and former home of the Houston Astros Major League Baseball team. The Astrodome was the first major sports venue to use the artificial turf and the publicity and nation-wide discussion about the merits of the fake grass created a marketing opportunity too big to pass by. ChemGrass was rebranded AstroTurf and the term AstroTurf, to this day, is synonymous with artificial turf.
