Answer: Flags

There’s a group dedicated to studying just about everything that can be studied, and flags are no exception. The term used to describe such scholars was conceived in 1957 by U.S. flag researcher and historian Whitney Smith and is a combination of the Latin root vexillum (“flag”) and the Greek suffix –logia (“study”).

As such, the field of study focused on flags is vexillology, a person who does the actual studying is a vexillologist, the art of designing flags is vexillography (and, you guessed it, the actual designer is a vexillographer), and if you’re just a person that really admires a good looking flag, you’re a vexillophile.

There is even an international organization dedicated to the subject, the International Federation of Vexillological Associations (also known as FIAV, a French acronym for Fédération internationale des associations vexillologiques) which, of course, has its own flag (seen above).
